Ottawa is launching a new initiative to lower electricity bills for about 70 per cent of Canadian households and create thousands of jobs.
It’s part of a new National Electricity Strategy that will double the capacity of our grid by 2050 and supply clean power across the country. This could amount to savings up to $15 billion.
“Over the next few months, we’ll work with provinces, territories, Indigenous peoples, utilities, unions to identify the actions needed to double our grid most effectively and affordably,” said Carney in an announcement in Ottawa, Thursday.
There are four parts to it including building the infrastructure needed to double generation, new expanded transmission lines, train the talent needed to build the grid and make the technology here at home.
“Doubling our electricity grid will create nearly 30,000 new high-paying jobs for Canadians by the end of 2028. One hundred thousand more by 2050,” said Carney. “Right now, over 80 per cent of employers in the sector are facing labour shortages.”
Carney said there will also be grants and other “complimentary measures” to expand support for retrofitting up to one million homes.
That means making it easier for Canadians to transition from propane heating oil and electric baseboard heating to heat pumps.
Carney said, work to double our grid is already underway with various projects.
