A Halifax teen who was allegedly associated with a violent extremist group had four out of five child pornography and hatred charges he was facing, dropped.
The province’s public prosecution service tells us that after reviewing the file, “the Crown determined there was no realistic prospect of conviction and was compelled to withdraw these charges.”
It was in May, when the RCMP and the Halifax Regional Police started investigating a youth who was an active member of an online group called 764, a subgroup of the Com Network.
Police say they often target children, youth and vulnerable adults and manipulate them into sharing intimate images or sharing images of violence against themselves and others.
Halifax Regional Police Chief Don MacLean says it happens on apps like Discord and Telegram and games like Roblox and Minecraft.
The teen is still facing one count of possession of child pornography and is scheduled to return to Halifax Youth Court February 26 for a status report.
