Budget includes money to diversify seafood export markets

The provincial budget includes money for the fishery.

That includes $200,000 to help Nova Scotia diversify seafood markets.

Fisheries minister Kent Smith just completed a trade mission to Europe, in the wake of tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Smith says they’ll continue to look at markets away from the U.S.

“We are reliant on the U.S, but the product is not necessarily going to the U.S, some of it is going through the U.S. So if we can find out where it’s going, we can market there and target it as well,” said Smith during Tuesday’s Question Period in the Legislature.

There’s also over $300,000 to strengthen enforcement of illegal fishing activities, and money toward a seafood sector strategy.
