UPDATE: Man dies after being struck by equipment at Halifax’s Irving Shipbuilding

A 43-year old man was the victim of a fatal workplace incident at Halifax’s Irving Shipbuilding.

Halifax Police say it happened just after 11:30 a.m. Monday, as the man was struck by a piece of equipment.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the investigation is in its early stages, the Department of Labour and the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division are on the case.

In a social media post follow the death, Irving announced it was cancelling its afternoon and night shifts.

Meantime, the union representing 1,150 workers at the Halifax Shipyard is mourning the loss of a member. Unifor (MWF Local 1) sent out a statement indicating support will be available.

“Our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies and solidarity are with our member’s family and loved ones including their Unifor family and co-workers,” read a statement posted on their website. “Unifor is working to ensure there is full-time, onsite grief counselling services available to all shipyard workers as they process this great loss.”
