Yarmouth Mayor Concerned About Masland’s Comments On CAT Ferry

The Mayor of Yarmouth is concerned about the province’s stance on the CAT ferry.

The government plans to review the Nova Scotia-to-Maine service at the end of the sailing season.

Public Works Minister Kim Masland expressed disappointment in passenger numbers, and suggested last week that cancellation could be an option.

Mayor Pam Mood says Masland’s remarks were dangerous.

“Then people start to think, ‘should I travel? Should I open a business? Should I move?’ It’s just dangerous. When you’re trying to build a province, the last thing you should do is throw a wrench in like this,” says Mood.

The ferry is expected to carry up to 41-thousand passengers this season, down from 50,000 in 2018.

Mood says the town has invested in Phase One of Yarmouth International Ferry Terminal renovations.

“Millions have been put in, and it’s not up to towns or municipalities to put funds into these things. But we have, because we know the difference that the ferry makes.”

Mood says the tourism industry is recovering, and it would make zero sense to cut the service.
