Inspired by the Los Angeles Kings announcing that newly retired Dustin Brown will be receiving a statue outside of Crypto.com Arena in 2023, we got to wondering, who should be immortalized here?
Sidney Crosby
The Crosby Show from Cole Harbour will likely be the main vote getter. Not only has Captain Crosby raised the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins three times, but he also brought home gold for Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics with the “Golden Goal”.
Then, on top of all of that, number 87 truly embodies the best of our Nova Scotian values. He is kind, charitable and always puts his community first.
He’s also the eldest of the big three current Nova Scotian NHL’ers and has played the longest meaning he’ll likely retire the soonest – we assume. In other words, he’s a prime candidate.

Nathan MacKinnon
In an interview with the Maritimes-based High Button Sports podcast, Nathan MacKinnon said though Cole Harbour “means the world” to him, Halifax is where he played junior and built a strong connection with the city.https://t.co/UHcoMeeq5J

Nate MacKinnon has officially won his first Stanley Cup and has entered the conversation as another heavy candidate for the first Halifax NHL’er statue for a pair of reasons. Number one, obviously, he’s a local Cole Harbour kid who made it big and then won it all.
However, what may put Nate ahead of the pack even is his junior career for the Halifax Mooseheads. It’s because of his junior days that he’s also bringing the cup to Halifax instead of his actual nearby hometown.

Brad Marchand
While he is Bedford/Hammond’s Plains home grown son, Marchand’s popularity wavers a little among Haligonians. His skill with the puck and resume cannot be dismissed, but his style of play has grown a little tired among some local hockey fans. His multiple suspensions and unsportsmanlike play have made him target number one for a lot of folk out there.
However, with that said, the way he’s played the game has clearly worked just fine for him and his team and isn’t that what it’s all about – winning? There’s no question that he’s done that in heavy fashion. He’s won a cup and is a two-time NHL all-star. He’s also a hefty statue candidate either way you slice it! We just don’t think he’ll get the first.
