The director of the United Nations’ World Food Programme said in an interview with CNN that Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos could solve world hunger for $6 billion. Which is just a fraction of their net worth.
So after being name dropped, Elon took to Twitter to give his thoughts. He said, quote, “If WFP can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6 billion will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it, but it must be open-source accounting, so the public sees precisely how the money is spent.”
The director responded by saying that the CNN headline was inaccurate and, quote, “$6 billion will not solve world hunger, but it will prevent geopolitical instability, mass migration and save 42 million people on the brink of starvation.”
But Elon remained firm and said, quote, “Please publish your current & proposed spending in detail so people can see exactly where money goes . . . Sunlight is a wonderful thing.”
The director wouldn’t commit to that. Instead he just said, “let me show you . . . we can meet.”
Since then, CNN has added a correction to the bottom of their article saying the director doesn’t believe Elon’s money can solve world hunger, but it could help.
