You might just stop seeing trucks wedged in the MacKay Bridge tolls.
Steven Proctor, communications manager for Halifax Harbour Bridges, said 18 trucks have smashed into the toll booth’s canopy this year, up from only 4 in 2020.
Proctor said, in an effort to stop that from happening, they’re putting a clearance bar 10 feet before the tolls.
“It’s the same kind of thing as you would have at an underground parking lot,” he said. “It just lets you know what the maximum height is for the space that you’re going into.”
He said often the accidents come from regular people driving rented trucks, but they have also seen big rigs and busses jammed into the tolls.
Proctor said big trucks will hit the clearance bars before they hit the tolls.
“If somebody’s coming along, they will hit the bar and go ‘hey, this clunk, that means I’m not going to be able to get through that hole in front of me.’”
Proctor says the bars are set to be installed by the end of November.
