What elements does a movie have to have to make it a Christmas movie?
We at Surge head office decided early this morning to take a closer look and dissect this universal problem. You may be thinking to yourself, “Whoa hold up, is this really a problem?” Well, yes. Yes it is.
People keep asking, “Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?” year after year so this dilemma definitely deserves some attention. This question is almost posed as often as pineapple on pizza. So let’s take a closer look.
For starters, the answer that we’ve come up with is, if your movie has the late Allan Rickman in it then yes, it is probably Christmas movie. So just like that, Die Hard has one point.

We should also mention that we’ve created a ‘Christmas Classic’ scale system. If a movie gets three points it’s officially a holiday favourite.
So far Die Hard has one point.
It also contains a Christmas tree on Holly’s office floor in the Nakatomi Tower. There’s two points. Hell, maybe that’s three points already because her name is HOLLY!

We’ll stick to the system though, because a name can’t really be an element according to our strict scale.
So, finally, the Bruce Willis classic also contains wrapping paper (technically it’s wrapping tape) – another Christmas must!
Said wrapping paper (and or tape) is picturesquely featured holding John McClane’s gun to his back in the final stand off with Hans Gruber, so YES. It’s settled.
Game, set and match. Welcome to the Christmas circle Die Hard!
