A new bill could mean adjusted mandatory drug sentences for related charges.
The Federal Liberals are presenting a bill in the house of commons today that would repeal a current ruling for mandatory minimum penalties for drug charges. The repeal is in an effort to ease sentencing for those who aren’t a threat to public safety.
As well, the bill would often capture first time offenders and a disproportionate number of Indigenous and Black people.
If the bill had passed in its original form, it would’ve allowed for more conditional sentences (like bracelet monitoring and house arrest) for individuals who aren’t a threat to public safety.
