Austin Butler and Tom Hanks are going to reprise the King in a new Elvis movie to be released on June 24, 2022. We’re absolutely stoked about what’s to come and it’s got the brain cells firing about our top five most amazing music biopics of all-time.
Now, before we get going here, let us just clarify that this is the top actor’s playing singers biopics.
Let’s dive in shall we?
5. Straight Outta Compton
Perhaps the best way to go in a music movie is to not focus on just one star the whole time? Maybe it makes it a little more special? We don’t know. Either way, they nailed it!
4. Blues Brothers
Yes, they were a fictional group, so should they be allowed on this list? Well, they did a little tour and a lot of live performances after the movie dropped. So we feel that yes – they absolutely belong on this list!
3. Ray
Ali was Jamie Foxx’s coming out party as an incredible actor. While many may argue Bootie Call was his most prized role (nobody says that), his Ray Charles reprisal cemented his legendary presence in Ray. He took home the Best Actor golden statue at the Academy Awards for his take on the classic singer’s life and knocked our socks off in the process. Excellent movie!
2. Walk the Line
Reese Witherspoon took home the Best Actress award, Joaquin Phoenix was nominated and it was also just a badass movie. It told the Johnny Cash story away from the stage and the music, but his performance at Folsom Prison in this movie was one of the most epic music scenes in our books. Phoenix and Reese killed it!
1. Bohemian Rhapsody
Rami Malek was named Best Actor and the movie ended up going four for four at the Oscars. The awards make no difference with this one though, it was just a great all-around film that we loved. The other great incentive is that the songs were all voiced by Canadian Marc Martel. He led the band in the Ultimate Queen Celebration following the show, but still (for some reason) didn’t replace Adam Lambert as the lead singer of the current band.
Here’s Marc and here’s why we’re blown away by this guy…
Alright, let’s queue up a little honourable mention here.
- The Doors starring Val Kilmer
- Rocketman starring Teron Egerton
- 8 Mile starring Eminem – A fictional, but not really fictional story
- Rock Star starring Mark Wahlberg – The loose rendition of the Judas Priest story
- Almost Famous – The loose rendition of the Cameron Crowe story
