The education department in Nova Scotia is going to get rid of 150 positions, according to Minister Brendan Maguire.
The move comes as the department meets a 3 per cent cost-saving measure mandated by the province.
Maguire said 47 of the roles impacted are through attrition and positions that have been vacant for years.
However, some are specialists as well as administrative, that have been implemented with good intentions but fell short.
“[Teachers] have a huge impact when they’re closer to the classroom and so a lot of it will be redeployment back to the classroom,” said Maguire.
“We know there are some regions that have a position that others don’t and we’re not getting the results from those. So, it’s really about consistency.”
His comments follow a letter he sent to the teachers giving the heads up on the move.
However, President of the Nova Scotia Teacher’s Union, Peter Day, went to social media to criticize the letter, calling it “vague”.
Day said what would be most useful would be to reduce class sizes, invest in more support service and to combat violence.
“What students and educators need are concrete measures – not more half-measures or hollow talk,” said Day. “We have already taken this route, and it didn’t work. Time to focus on what will work.”
That, Day said, starts with open dialogue.
