The MLA for Sackville-Cobequid says it’s been a rough stretch in the community after another devastating fire in two years.
Three adults died in a house fire over the weekend. It follows a major blaze that destroyed an apartment building in September 2025 and a fire in January 2025 that killed three children.
In an interview with our newsroom Paul Wozney says his first thought when something like this happens is always about the family and friends most affected.
“It’s a tough thing for anybody to go through,” says Wozney. “So, I think people are just concerned about the families and whether or not they’re getting the support they need.”
He says there is now a GoFundMe organized by the sister of one of the victims while others wait to figure out how they can help.
“That’s just sort of wired into the DNA of Sackville as a community at its roots,” explains Wozney. “The idea that somebody is hurting, that we would look out for one another.”
It was in the early morning hours on Saturday when the fire started on Manor Drive. Crews had difficulty entering the home due to smoky conditions but once in took three people out.
All of them died from their injuries.
According to the fundraiser, it was a 38-year-old mother of two, her 43-year-old boyfriend and his 73-year-old mother.
Wozney says it’s about recognizing the impact a tragedy like this has on the community.
“If anybody is really struggling with processing their experience of this, we’d be happy to connect people to support through my office,” adds Wozney.
He adds that as an MLA he wants to connect with the fire chief and visit Manor Drive.
“To pay my respects at the site and touch base with neighbours to see if there’s anything we can be doing,” he says. “You know, it’s not easy work.”
