New federal funding is being directed toward a major infrastructure project in Halifax aimed at supporting future housing growth.
The federal government has announced a $28 million investment for wastewater upgrades tied to the Windsor Street Exchange redevelopment project.
The funding will go toward increasing capacity in the wastewater system, including replacing sections of combined sewer along Kempt Road with larger pipes.
Officials say the work is needed to support additional housing and development in the area.
Andy Fillmore says the investment is a key step forward for one of the region’s largest infrastructure projects.
“This investment… unlocks the capacity needed to support new housing and meet the demands of our growing municipality,” he said.
The Windsor Street Exchange project is a multi-phase redevelopment that also includes road upgrades, transit improvements, and active transportation infrastructure.
Federal officials say the funding is part of the new Build Communities Strong Fund, a program that will provide $51 billion over 10 years for infrastructure projects across the country.
The government says the goal is to support housing, economic growth, and essential services in communities across Canada.
Local officials say projects like Windsor Street Exchange are critical to ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with population growth and development.
