Freezing rain is set to impact much of Nova Scotia today, with the most severe conditions expected in parts of the mainland.
Environment Canada has issued freezing rain warnings for areas where ice build-up is expected to be heaviest, including Antigonish, Colchester, Cumberland, and Pictou counties. Those regions could see between 10 and 25 millimetres of ice accumulation through Wednesday morning.
The system is expected to intensify overnight, bringing a mix of freezing rain, ice pellets, and some wet snow. The amount of ice in warning areas could be enough to damage trees and power lines, and lead to outages and travel disruptions.
In other parts of the province, including Halifax, Hants, Guysborough, Richmond, and Cape Breton, a special weather statement for freezing rain is in place. Freezing rain is still expected in those areas, but amounts are forecast to be lower.
Officials warn that even small amounts of ice can make roads and walkways slippery. Drivers are being urged to slow down and allow extra time, while residents should watch for falling branches and avoid downed power lines.
Conditions are expected to ease later Wednesday as the system moves out.
