It looks a federal fund is going to continue for the fishing industry.
Ottawa says they’ve entered negotiations for a five-year renewal of the Atlantic Fisheries Fund.
It began in 2017, and has provided around $400 million toward 1,300 projects in the seafood sector, according to Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson.
Acadie-Annapolis MP Chris d’Entremont says he’s worked with Thompson and other MPs to make sure the fund is here to stay.
“Very very successful in getting similar amounts, but that amount can’t be announced until we have discussions with the provinces to see what their participation is going to be,” said d’Entremont.
He adds the projects help the industry with growing demands and making sure products are high-quality.
“There’s been a fair amount of business work to make sure the seafood industry can continue to compete in a world market that’s rapidly changing. We can work on new technologies and infrastructure, so we need to be able to provide that support.”
d’Entremont says some projects that have been funded in the past include storage and refrigeration for the lobster industry, and production line investments.
