Some Halifax Water customers had their information exposed in a data breach related to the utility’s Customer Connect portal.
They say someone or some group had “unauthorized access” to their Customer Connect online portal, and they have temporarily shut it down as they investigate, according to a news release from Friday afternoon.
They do not know what information was accessed or how many customers are affected, but they say there is no indication it was financial information. Halifax Water is investigating and they say they plan to “strengthen protections” before Customer Connect goes back online.
The utility will provide an update later today.
In the meantime, they are warning people to watch out for scammers.
If you get a call, email or text from someone claiming to be Halifax water and are unsure if it is a scam, do not give out any personal information, they say. Instead, double check the source of the call, text, or email using the phone number on Halifax Water’s website. You can call their Customer Care Team at (902) 420-9287 from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The utility is not contacting customers about the breach at this time, they say.
This comes as the province approaches the one-year anniversary of the data breach at Nova Scotia Power. In the spring of 2025, more than 250,000 customers had their information stolen.
And back in 2023, Halifax Water had another breach as part of the global cyber attack on the MOVEit file service, where about 25,000 accounts were exposed, including names and account numbers.
