When it comes to health care spending in Nova Scotia, the health minister said the PC’s have put their money where their mouth is.
A recent report by the Auditor General highlighted that healthcare spending has increased over the last four years.
However, Michelle Thompson defended what they have done so far and told reporters that is why they were re-elected.
“We need these investments to get us to a place where we can right size. We will optimize those assets. We need to continue to look at innovation. We need to look at different care models. All of those things will happen,” said Thompson.
The province was recently under fire for not expanding the Cobequid Health Centre with inpatient beds after patients spent days in the emergency department.
It is one example of projects not getting tackled, but Thompson said some are still in the planning stage.
“We need to look at the assets in the province and the demographics and the disease burden or the care burden,” explained Thompson.
She added that they are open minded to see other ways of doing things, have learned a lot and will continue to try and provide the best care they can.
“I think Nova Scotian’s want us to continue to invest in health care,” said Thompson. When I look back, I don’t know what I would change.”
