There’s a growing culture of safety in Nova Scotia’s fishing industry.
According to the Workers Compensation Board, the injury rate has dropped 45 percent in the last five years.
CEO of WCB Nova Scotia Karen Adams says it’s due to collaboration among industry partners.
“Groups of people from employers and workers across the province are just as keen as we are to keep the injury numbers down,” said Adams.
“They make sure appropriate training is in place, and PFD’s are worn. It also includes workers taking their own safety seriously.”
Next month marks the five year anniversary of the sinking of the ‘Chief William Saulis’ in the Bay of Fundy, six fishers lost their lives.
Adams says they will never be forgotten, and it’s a memory of the dangers fishers face on the water.
WCB shared the numbers on Dumping Day, the start of the fall lobster fishery in southwestern Nova Scotia.
Adams adds there’s still work to do, as two fishers lost their lives over the past year.
