The PWHL unveiled the logos and names of its newest teams Thursday.
The Seattle Torrent and Vancouver Goldeneyes are set to begin play later this month when the season opens.
With the new additions, the league now has eight teams. Seattle and Vancouver are the first to be based on the West Coast.
“The Seattle Torrent and Vancouver Goldeneyes are bold, distinctive and true to who we are as a league,” said PWHL executive vice-president of business operations Amy Scheer in a release.
The Torrent draw inspiration from the powerful waterways that shape and connect Washington state’s unique landscape. The primary colours of the uniform are slate green, shadow blue and glacier blue. They’ll be complemented by foam, haze grey and basalt black.
The Goldeneyes identity is inspired by the fiercely protective common goldeneye, a bird native to Vancouver’s waterways, coastlines and mountain vistas. Their primary colours will be Pacific blue, coastal cream and earthy bronze, with hints of sunset gold and sky blue.
In a release, Torrent forward Hilary Knight said she’s excited for fans to learn the team is officially the Torrent.
“Whenever you’re looking at the culture of a group, you want it to be a really strong room,” Knight said. “And to pair that with an incredible city with a storied sports legacy and a brand new identity that speaks to all of that, it’s a great recipe for us.
Goldeneyes forward and Surrey, B.C., native Jenn Gardiner called the name powerful.
“This identity is a perfect reflection of who we are, where we come from and that we will be relentless to play against every single night,” she said. “This is our identity, our province and our opportunity to show the rest of the league what hockey in B.C. is all about.”
The two teams will meet for the first time in Vancouver’s inaugural home opener at Pacific Coliseum on Nov. 21.
