New transmission lines between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick could boost both power grids.
The high voltage line, called the Reliability Intertie, will run alongside power lines from Onslow, N.S., to Salisbury, N.B.
Energy Minister Trevor Boudreau says will help the green energy sector.
Nova Scotia has a lot of wind energy, so the turbines could produce extra. In that case, the new line will let them send some energy to New Brunswick or potentially elsewhere, including New England.
“That’s the real goal, (it’s) about being that energy hub, not only controlling our own destiny, but also supporting our neighbors as well,” said Boudreau.
Although he mentioned New England, which is in the United States, Boudreau said they would use the transmission lines to help boost interprovincial trade between provinces.
The feds and Nova Scotia Power have an equal stake in the project. The feds announced $217 million for the project last week.
They also plan to offer a stake of the project to a group of 13 Mi’kmaw First Nations.
Construction is expected to start in the fall of 2026.
