More strong words about Canada from Donald Trump.
The U.S. President spoke of his need for new trade tariffs while speaking to delegates attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
He argues the U.S. has not been treated fairly or respected by other nations, including Canada when it comes to trade.
“Canada has been very tough to deal with over the years, and it’s not fair that we should have a $200 billion or $250 billion deficit,” says Trump.
He added that the U.S. does not need what Canada has to offer.
“We don’t need them to make our cars, and they make a lot of them. We don’t need their lumber because we have our own forests, et cetera, et cetera. We don’t need their oil and gas. We have more than anybody.”
He noted the U.S. stands to earn more than $25 billion from the tariffs proposed on Canada and other countries, money Trump says will be used to pay down the debt.
Trump says companies that set up operations in the U.S. would face lower tariffs.
He also repeated the notion of Canada joining the U.S.
“I say you can always become a state. Then, if you’re a state, we won’t have a deficit. We won’t have to tariff you.”
