Ottawa is stepping in to try and end labour problems at vital shipping corridors in our country.
The federal government is calling for binding arbitration to iron out new contracts and resume work at ports in Montreal and Vancouver.
Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon made the announcement Tuesday and said it’s not a decision they take lightly.
“It is my belief and our government’s belief, collective agreements reached at the bargaining table are the most durable agreements it is possible to conclude….that has not changed.”
The move means a third party will decide on the outstanding terms of a new contract.
It’s the second time in six months, the federal government has ordered binding arbitration to settle a labour dispute. The most recent was to end the work stoppage at CN Rail in the summer.
MacKinnon believes work at the ports could resume in a few days.
The Canada Industrial Relations Board will now determine the next steps and timeline.
