Another entangled North Atlantic right whale has been spotted in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada says the whale was spotted east New Brunswick’s Miscou Island on Saturday.
A DFO science team observed the mammal amongst a group of right whales during a routine flight.
The entangled whale has been identified as Dropcloth, an adult male of unknown age.
“Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Marine Mammal Response Program will continue to monitor the situation to determine response options with our partners,” the department said in a statement.
“If the whale is located again, and weather and sea conditions allow, efforts will be made to attempt disentanglement.”
Officials do not yet know the type of gear he’s entangled in or where it came from. That is typically only confirmed after investigation and when gear is removed from an animal, when possible.
