Pallet shelters will not be coming to the Forum.
Minister of Community Services Minister Trevor Boudreau told reporters Thursday, the site is too small to fit the required 10 units, even though initially it seemed the land would be suitable.
“Coordinating and looking how pallets fit and how the facilities for washrooms and laundry facilities fit, it was determined this site was not able to hold that number of pallet shelters and the number of facilities needed,” said Boudreau.
Broudreau said they will continue with a sense of urgency and have conversations to move things forward.
The province spent $3 million on a new 70-bed temporary shelter at the Forum which opened this week, with thirty beds being held for those living in Grand Parade and the Cobequid ball field in Lower Sackville.
In addition, HRM said in a release that supportive housing units for 32 women and gender-diverse people, announced in November, will open February 5 at the former Waverley Inn on Barrington Street in Halifax. YWCA Halifax will provide 24/7 on-site support.
