She’s the pride of Big Pond, Nova Scotia, a Canadian icon, and songstress with the voice of an angel. And she’s about to add another prestigious milestone to her lengthy list of accomplishments.
Rita MacNeil will be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Friday night during the East Coast Music Awards. The induction will be broadcast live at 8pm. (Atlantic) on the ECMA’S Facebook and YouTube channels.
During her illustrious career, MacNeil released 24 albums, winning three Junos, a SOCAN National Achievement Award, four Canadian Country Music Association titles , and 11 East Coast Music Awards. She was also enshrined into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, and was a recipient of the Order of Nova Scotia and the Order of Canada.
Rita, as millions affectionately called her, recorded countless songs, scoring two major hits with ‘Flying On Your Own’ & ‘Working Man’. She died in April 2013 from complications following surgery. She was 68.
