A Liberal MLA fighting breast cancer wants to make Nova Scotia a leader in screenings.
Clayton Park West’s Rafah DiCostanzo tabled a bill virtually in the legislature to expand screenings for high breast density patients.
She says the province must do more to ensure women with dense breasts are getting access to help improve outcomes.
This was welcomed by the executive director of Dense Breasts Canada, Jennie Dale.
“Cancer shows up white on a mammogram, dense tissue shows up white, so there’s a masking effect. So women with dense breasts need more, and what this Bill is doing is giving them possibilities to get additional screenings,” said Dale.
Dale was at the legislature Thursday to endorse the bill.
“It’s the right thing to do. The evidence is very clear that ultrasounds can find additional cancers missed by mammograms. It’s a really important thing to do, you can’t negate it.”
She says it could be the first screening program to offer this, and the province is already a leader for screening women in their 40s.
