Every time a new Transformers movie is announced, my initial reaction is that I am going to skip it. This franchise has burned me in the past. Then they release a trailer and there is always a cool looking moment that gets me interested and I return to the theater, hoping against hope that this one will be different. Usually, it isn’t.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts does have some cool moments, but overall, it is another disappointment. There definitely are some cool moments, and the action is very well done, and there is a lot of it. Where this movie fails is with the human characters. There is far too much time spent on their stories, and motivations.
When going to a movie like this, no one is there for the human characters. I understand they are a necessary evil, but don’t make them the focus. The Transformers are the draw, so focus on them. In the case of Rise of the Beasts the Maximals are a big draw, and they are done very well. It would have been great if they had some more screen time.
There is a moment at the end of the movie that did make the child in me very excited, but based on the past films I am not sure they will execute it correctly. Time will tell, and I’m crossing my fingers it works out. (I don’t want to spoil it)
If you are a massive fan of Transformers there is probably enough here to make it worth the trip to the theater, if not you can wait and catch it at home later.
