Alright, here’s what we know so far to be true. If you used to work for Twitter before Elon Musk took over, you’re likely fired. If you used to be verified for being a celebrity or what have you, you’re now having to pay money to prove your “specialness”.
To add to that, though, if you’re pretending to be somebody you’re not it may be okay – except if that person is Elon Musk.
From the looks of it, you can pretend to be anybody on Twitter and all you have to do is pay a few bucks a month and they’ll verify your account with a little fine print to adhere to. However, if you’re Kathy Griffin and you pretend to be Elon Musk, well you are S.O.L.
The comedian changed her name to “Elon Musk” and this goes directly against the company’s “impersonation rule” – which apparently is a thing. In turn, her account was suspended until further notice.
It doesn’t make a ton of sense because the online social media giant is promoting that you can verify yourself (or your moniker) for a monthly charge with really only one rule in place. You must specify if your account is a parody or not. One would have to think, millions of verified accounts will be popping up soon though that do not specify.
Are they all going to be suspended if they’re paying customers?
From all angles looking in, the early stages of this pay for verification age could be very messy. Thus far, Kathy Griffin is the first victim, but she likely won’t be the last.
