Yesterday was World Mental Health Day, but I think we could and should talk about mental health outside of days that have been specified for it.
Our mental health is always under assault. We are coming out of a pandemic, just had a hurricane rip through, and things are more expensive than ever. That is not to mention the normal stresses that are thrown upon us. It is a constant struggle to feel ok. Sure, some of us cope better, but that doesn’t make anyone having a hard time weak.
It is ok to ask for help. I want to repeat that, it is ok to ask for help. It can be the hardest thing to do, but you will not regret it.
There is no x-ray for mental health, the only way to start down the path of getting better, or at least getting the tools to manage better, is to talk to someone about it. It can be a friend, family member, your doctor, it doesn’t matter, just start talking about it.
I’m not saying it will always be easy. I have been dealing with my mental health issues for years, and it is still hard for me to talk about it at times. When I do, it starts making things feel a bit better.
I will tell you my main mental health problems are depression and anxiety. Despite having been given a lot of tools over the years from things I have read and my therapist, some days the depression and anxiety still get the upper hand. It is almost like a never-ending boxing match in my brain. Some rounds I win, some rounds they win.
If you have been feeling down, or lost motivation to do things you like to do, or even just off, talk to someone about it. Like I said, starting the conversation is the first step. It won’t be easy, at times it will be very hard, but it will be worth it.
If you are not sure where to start the province does offer some great services, you can find that information here.
