The sailing season for the ‘CAT’ ferry is over.
Yesterday, the final crossing between Yarmouth and Bar Harbor, Maine was completed.
Bay Ferries has not released final passenger numbers yet, but last month they projected up to 41,000 people would use the service this year.
Last month, Public Works Minister Kim Masland called the numbers ‘disappointing,’ and said contract with Bay Ferries will be reviewed.
Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood says there’s nothing wrong with the numbers.
“The ferry was running for three years before COVID shut it down. They were at year two numbers in the first few months,” says Mayor Mood.
She says the passengers tour the whole province.
“That rising tide floats all boats. When one of us is successful, all of us are successful. If you take away the ferry, you’re not taking it from Yarmouth, you’re taking it from Nova Scotia.”
Mood has requested that other mayors and wardens write a letter to the province on the importance of the service.
