Halifax is gearing up for its biggest fireworks show since the Tall Ships in 2017.
Events Coordinator Billy Comer tells our newsroom we’ll bid farewell to summer with a huge celebration called the “Grand Reunion Finale Weekend.”
The free event was created to honour first responders and their hard work to keep Nova Scotians safe during the pandemic.
Comer says the fireworks display will kick off with a tribute to those workers with Haligonians encouraged to reflect on the support they provide.
He adds the show will truly light up the sky with two barges being set up.
“One will be placed closer to Dartmouth and one closer to Halifax,” Comer explains. “It’s going to give you a bit of a competing barges feel. I think it’s going to be exciting. We definitely think it will be the biggest since the Tall Ships.”
He adds there are many places you’ll be able to catch the show from along both sides of the harbour.

On the Dartmouth side, he recommends the waterfront, King’s Wharf, Alderney Landing, and the NSCC Ivany Campus.
“If you get yourself to the shoreline, it’s a big show,” Comer says. “So you should be able to see it.”
He says the Halifax waterfront is a great option, adding you can plan your spot to view based on events being held in the area like the Cirque Spectacle.
The performance will feature acrobats, contortionists, and a huge colourful Octopus.

The performers and octopus will travel from Sackville Landing to Queens Marque area, starting at 8:00 p.m.
“This is my favourite part of the whole weekend,” Comer says. “Simon Rioux, he’s from Quebec City. He’s like an emerging Cirque du Soleil-style curator, performer, and artist. He’s bringing down 14 performing artists from Quebec City for the spectacle. There are puppeteers, there are acrobats, a mermaid that actually sings, and a life-sized octopus with LED features.”

The fireworks launch at 10 p.m.
There will also be a series of concerts this weekend, starting with Matt Anderson and the Big Bottle of Joy on Friday at Grand Parade at 7 p.m.
You can catch music from DVSN, Preston Pablo, Nicole Ariana, and more at that same stage and time on Saturday night.
April Wine will play at Alderney Landing with the doors opening at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets for that show were snatched up in less than two days.
