A proclamation by Mi’kmaw chiefs yesterday in Cape Breton.
Mi’kmaw is set to become Nova Scotia’s first language on October 1st.
Premier Tim Houston joined the Chiefs in Potlotek First Nation for the event.
Grand Chief of the Mi’kmaw Grand Council Norman Sylliboy says they’re pleased to collaborate with government to ensure the language thrives for future generations.
The province passed legislation in April in response to the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice.
Houston says this is another step on a path to reconciliation.
