The province is spending $1.7 million to expand an African Nova Scotian community hub in North End.
The money is going to the Richard Preston Centre of Excellence at New Horizons Baptist Church.
It’ll create more spaces for tutoring, mentoring programs, youth programming, community services, and gatherings.
Rhonda Britton, Pastor at New Horizons Baptist Church, says it’s an important part of their work in community outreach.
“The Richard Preston Centre for Excellence facilitates programming from education upgrades to mental and physical health awareness clinics to life skills workshops,” she says. “We are excited and grateful for this funding that affirms 190 years of the spiritual and social work of the church.”
She says the Centre for Excellence is an extension of the church’s legacy.
Pat Dunn, the Minster of African Nova Scotian Affairs, says the money will make a serious difference to people in the community.
“Community hubs have the potential to improve the lives of community members through various activities, programs and services,” he says. “Through their culturally focused initiatives and projects.”
The total cost of the ongoing project is estimated at $3.8 million.
