The Prime Minister is pulling the plug on the Emergencies Act.
Justin Trudeau made it official at a conference Wednesday despite a separate motion on the act that is still being debated by the Senate.
“We’re ready to confirm that the situation is no longer an emergency. Therefore, the federal government will be ending the use of the Emergencies Act,” Trudeau said. “We need to constantly work to defend and improve our democracy at home and around the world.”
The Act was set to expire after 30 days had it not been revoked.
Trudeau also vowed the creation of a joint committee of parliamentarians within 60 days that will review the use of the Emergencies Act.
The government invoked the Emergencies Act on February 14th and the motion to confirm the declaration was adopted by the House of Commons on February 21st.
