Halifax’s downtown has grown by more than a quarter in the last five years.
A new report from Statistics Canada shows the population of downtown Halifax grew by 26.1 per cent from 2016 to 2021.

That’s well ahead of the country’s average over the same time period, 10.9 per cent, and three times faster than Halifax overall, which grew just 9.1 per cent.
That’s still an improvement over the county’s average city growth, which was 6.1 per cent.
The population growth rate makes Halifax’s the fastest growing downtown in the country, ahead of Montreal, Kelowna, and Calgary.
