Our sister station in Yarmouth CJLS 95.5 has reported that Shubenacadie Sam could be replaced by Lucy the Lobster in coming years. Now, although we’ve reached out to the Shubenacadie League of Incredible Groundhogs (not a real thing), we have not been able to confirm this breaking news just yet.
It did get us thinking though, if we do move on one day from the groundhog, who could be next and what would the protocol be?
Well, for starters, we know that alliteration is key. You’ve got Shubenacadie Sam, Punxsutawney Phil, Balzac Billy etc. First name/city name and last name must have the same letter. It’s a rule. It’s a commandment!
Here are a few ideas moving forward.
Antigonish Annie the Aardvark could be a pretty awesome starting point. We’d love to the see the Truro Toro at some point too, but – mind you – the bull could be pretty upset if he doesn’t see his shadow. While the Wolfville Wolf is a given, the Port Williams Porker could be a fun one and everyone loves piglets. Oh the possibilities!
