A 16-year-old boy in Halifax was sentenced Wednesday for multiple gun possession charges.
According to reports, the boy was originally charged after reaching out to a suicide hotline.
He told the operator he was planning to shoot up Citadel High School and then commit suicide.
Halifax Police Chief Don MacLean previously told reporters the boy reached out for help with his mental health.
“While it is natural to react to these types of events with fear, I do urge people to also react with compassion. Youth who consider violence as their last resort have been facing their own struggles and can be difficult to understand,” said MacLean.
Several others charges against the youth were dropped.
The boy will serve four months in the community with a curfew and cannot go within 50m of the high school.
