The Davis Cup World Group 1 Tie will not be played in front of spectators this weekend in Halifax due to safety concerns, according to Tennis Canada.
In a statement by the organization released, Tuesday, the match between Israel and Canada will be played in a closed venue.
“This decision was not taken lightly and was made in consultation with the International Tennis Federation (ITF),” says Tennis Canada is a release.
The organization says the decision was made after consultation with local authorities and national security agencies, indicated a risk of “significant disruption”.
The event has received backlash lately for going ahead despite Israel’s current actions in Gaza.
Gavin Ziv, Chief Executive Officer for Tennis Canada says, this decision is disappointing, it’s the only way to keep those involved safe and preserve the event itself.
“It allows the tie to proceed in Halifax and ensures that our athletes can continue to compete at the highest international level,” says Ziv in the release.
One of Canada’s biggest tennis stars, Felix Auger-Aliassime just pulled out of the international competition due to fatigue after completing a run to the U.S. Open semifinal last week.
Ticket holders will receive a full refund.
The winner of the tie will advance to qualifiers in 2026.
