The Halifax Regional Municipality says that Oakfield Park Beach has reopened to swimming following blue-green algae toxin testing.
The popular beach in Oakfield had been off limits to recreational use since August 22nd after officials detected potential signs of cyanobacteria.
According to Wednesday’s HRM release, test results have indicated toxin levels are within Health Canada limits and no new blue-green algae has been observed.
Blue-green algae can produce toxins that pose health risks to people and pets.
The municipality says when a blue-green algae bloom or mat is observed, the beach is closed, and initial testing is done to determine whether it is a toxin-producing blue-green algae bloom. If it is not toxin producing, no further testing is required, and the beach will be reopened.
If it is a toxin-producing blue-green algae bloom, further testing will be carried out and the beach will remain closed until blooms have disappeared and post-bloom test results indicate the toxin concentration is within Health Canada guidelines.
