As we start to get into the colder seasons, the province says they are working with HRM on more shelters for those living in tents.
Community Services Minister Brendan McGuire told reporters last week, they aren’t just looking at the Forum, but as many spaces as they can.
“This isn’t patch work. We don’t want a patchwork situation where we react. We want to be able to put people in permanent housing and give them a choice.”
The Forum announced in the summer it is going to stay open for another year, with the province set to pay another $5.4 million for day-to-day operations.
This covers staffing, utilizes, food, repairs, security and maintenance from September 1 to Aug. 31, 2025.
The shelter was originally set up in January as a temporary emergency place for people to go, costing the province about $3 million.
They also offer housing support services and supportive housing units in the Westphal area, according to a government news release.
The Forum started out with 70 beds, but now has 94.
McGuire says also coming are tiny homes and pallet shelters in addition to The Bridge and Adsum house.
