The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has officially declared the Listeria outbreak linked to Silk and Great Value plant-based milks over, as no new cases have been reported since August.
The announcement follows a thorough investigation that revealed contamination within one production facility; however, investigators were unable to identify the specific source of the contamination.
The outbreak, which led to 20 confirmed cases of Listeria monocytogenes illness across several provinces—including Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia—resulted in 15 hospitalizations and three reported deaths.
The illnesses were traced to various Silk and Great Value brand refrigerated beverages, prompting a nationwide recall on July 8.
As a precaution, production at the affected facility remains paused while renovations and enhanced safety protocols are implemented.
Consumers can expect to see Silk and Great Value plant-based milks back on store shelves soon, but these products will now come exclusively from facilities that are not linked to the outbreak.
