Hurricane Ernesto should remain well offshore as it tracks southeast of Newfoundland, according to forecasters.
As of 3 a.m. Monday, the centre of Ernesto was located 500 kilometres south of Sable Island and moving north-northeast at 43 kilometres per hour.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre said the category one storm had maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometres per hour.
Forecasters said Ernesto is expected to transition into a post-tropical storm as it passes south of Newfoundland later in the day Monday.
Large breaking waves will bring possible coastal flooding for the southern Avalon Peninsula and Placentia Bay.
Heavy rain and gusty winds are also expected throughout southeastern Newfoundland, according to forecasters.
Meanwhile, the storm is also producing moderate to heavy surf along Nova Scotia’s Atlantic coast.
Heavy downpours from a very tropical airmass, but not directly from Ernesto, are likely across the province on Monday.
