Community concern over the new nine potential tent sites in HRM has sparked an online petition.
The organizer for Protect Point Pleasant Park says they are a concerned group of citizens, “who want to protect their children from tent encampments in Point Pleasant Park where preschools, schools, camps and families bring young, vulnerable children to play every day.”
Halifax Council approved the locations Tuesday as the current encampments deal with overcrowding.
The sites include:
- Bayers Road Windsor Street Park (Halifax)
- BiHi Park (Halifax)
- Bisset Road (Dartmouth)
- Chain Lake Park (Halifax)
- Cogswell Park (Halifax)
- Geary Street Green Space (Dartmouth)
- Glebe Street Park (Halifax)
- Halifax Common (berm) (Halifax)
- Point Pleasant Park (Halifax)
The organizer of the petition says encampments for the unhoused are “a safety risk and fire hazard”.
“Allowing this in the middle of a dense, wooded and heavily trafficked public area is reckless and puts children and citizens at risk.”
The petition already has over 800 signatures, with a goal of reaching 1,000.
