Nova Scotians are another step closer to having more access to healthcare, as plans proceed for the expansion at the Halifax Infirmary.
The province says by early spring, fencing will go up, site excavation will begin, and workers will apply for construction permits for the new acute care tower at the QEII Health Science’s Centre.
These first steps will cost $254 million.
The new building will have 216 beds, 16 operating rooms, an ICU and a bigger ER.
Healthcare Minister Michelle Thompson says there is a long way to go but this is a “significant step forward for the largest healthcare construction project every considered in this province.”
Thompson says not only will it help attract and retain healthcare workers, but it will also mean better healthcare services for many years.
In addition, a new emergency department entrance off of Bell Rd will also be built, as well as upgrades to the Summer Street entrance.
The project was put on hold in October 2022 and work was expected to start last spring, after an agreement was reached with construction firm, Plenary PCL Health, in May 2023.
Construction is expected to continue through 2024.
