A motion pushed by the federal Conservatives to expand carve-outs on the carbon tax on all forms of home heating, was voted down.
The NDP backed the plan, but the Liberals and Bloc Quebecois did not, with a vote of 135 in favor to 186 against.
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said all of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s MP’s have divided the country.
“He’s now signed on with the separatists to divide Canadians into two separate classes; those who will have to pay carbon tax on their home heat, and a small minority who will get a pause from the pain,” Poilievre said.
Recently Trudeau announced a three year pause on carbon tax on home heating oil due to that form of heating being costly, but it also happens to be predominantly in Atlantic Canada.
Since, the federal government has received a lot of scrutiny from premiers, for not including all forms of home heating in the pause, including natural gas.
The NDP has said they believe all forms of home heating should be exempted from GST.
