The cash in your wallet could become digital, in the future.
The Bank of Canada is working on digital currency, the same as bank notes, but used online and with the same value. Also known as a digital Canadian dollar.
Physical cash would continue to be used, in addition to the digital notes, it would just be another way to pay.
The Bank says there is no need for the currency now, but there might be, at some point. Other countries around the world have already started to use digital currency including China, India and Nigeria with a handful of others, testing pilots. With more countries, making the switch, the Bank says there could come a time when regular cash is not as widely used.
