Requirements for caregivers when immigrating to Canada are being reduced by Ottawa.
Minister of Immigration Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, made the announcement that the amount of work experience required in Canada as a caregiver to qualify for permanent residence is being reduced from 24 months to 12 months.
A release also stated that under the existing caregiver pathways that experience on a previous work permit could be a permanent residence.
Changes from the federal government will be effective as of April 30, 2023, and will be retrospective for caregivers who have already applied.
With the reduction of the amount of work experience required, it’s expected to benefit close to 90 per cent of current applications
Since the launch of the pilots in 2019, nearly 1,600 caregivers and their family members have become permanent residents. In 2022 alone, nearly 1,100 caregivers and their family members became permanent residents through the two pilots.
