Recordings at the centre of allegations of political interference in the Nova Scotia Mass shooting have now been released.
The meeting on April 28th, 2020 involved Commissioner Brenda Lucki and other RCMP officials. It took place nine days after the gunman took the lives of 22 people in Nova Scotia.
In the audio, Lucki expresses disappointment with the force because details weren’t released about the guns during a press conference earlier that day.
“Does anybody realize what’s going on in the world of handguns and guns right now?,” Lucki asks. “The fact that they’re in the middle of trying to get a legislation going, the fact that legislation is supposed to actually help police.”
The allegations stemmed from notes taken during the meeting that were released this summer. Some on the call felt Lucki wanted the type of guns used in the shootings made public to prop up support for the Liberal’s new gun control laws.
During the meeting, Lucki reported she had received a request from a minister’s office to publicly share the information that semi-automatic or assault-style weapons were used.
“It was a request that I got from the minister’s office,” Lucki stated. “I shared with the minister that it was in fact going to be in the news release and it wasn’t. Honestly, I was very frustrated, very disappointed, and I was feeling quite disrespected by what happened today and probably some of the stuff that’s happened this week. The flow of information has been very difficult.”
Lucki also said she understood and respected the protocol around keeping some information back from the public to protect an investigation.
She did not name the minister who requested the information.
