The Watcher has taken over Netflix and people are talking about the true story that inspired the series.
While the show is very well done, and entertaining it takes many liberties with the real events.
Here is what we know to be the real story:
In 2014, Derek and Maria Broaddus bought a stunning old colonial home for around $1.3 million dollars. Their plan was to do a renovation and then move the family in.
However, it was not long after purchase those ominous letters started arriving in their mailbox.
The first letter started off friendly. Welcoming the Broaddus family to the neighborhood. Then things got creepy and strange.
Apparently watching this house was a family affair, as one letter stated, “My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched in the 1960s. It is now my time.”
This letter also referenced the children, calling them young blood. Saying the house wanted the young blood. The letter was signed by ‘The Watcher’.
Obviously, the letter unnerved the new owners, they even searched the house and found nothing in the walls. They contacted the previous owners, but that family said they got one letter from The Watcher, but it was just before they moved out. Since they had lived there for over twenty years and never heard from The Watcher before they assumed it was a prank and threw the letter out.
Over the next few months, the family received more letters and it got to the point they decided to sell the house. In fact, they never fully moved into the house, that is how freaked out they were.
They sold the house for $959,000, taking quite a loss on the property.
Some theories suggest that the letters were a hoax, however no evidence implicates the Broaddus family. As of now it is still an open and active case.
Would you have stayed in the house, or sold like they did?
